Calculating the Estimated Due Date (EDD)

A full-term pregnancy is typically considered **40 weeks** (280 days) from the first day of the Last Menstrual Period (LMP). The two most common calculation methods are:

  • **Naegele's Rule:** LMP Date + 7 Days + 9 Months.
  • **Conception Date:** Conception Date + 266 Days (38 weeks).
The EDD is only an estimate; only about 5% of babies are born on their exact due date. The majority arrive within two weeks before or after the EDD.

Adjusting for Cycle Length

If your average menstrual cycle is not 28 days, the calculator adjusts the date. For every day your cycle is longer than 28 days, one day is added to the EDD. Conversely, for every day shorter than 28 days, one day is subtracted from the EDD.
