The Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi
**Ganesh Chaturthi** is a 10-day Hindu festival that celebrates the arrival of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune, to earth from Mount Kailash with his mother Goddess Parvati. It is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada, typically falling between mid-August and mid-September of the Gregorian calendar.
Rituals and Celebrations
The festival begins with the installation of beautifully crafted **clay idols (murtis)** of Ganesha in homes and large public pandals (temporary shrines). The idol is worshiped with rituals called **Shodashopachara Puja**, which involves offering prayers, sweet modaks (his favorite food), and flowers for 10 days. The festival culminates on the tenth day, **Anant Chaturdashi**, when the idol is immersed in a body of water (visarjan), symbolizing Ganesha's return to his heavenly abode and carrying away the misfortune of all mankind.
